fruits of the marriage

The idea for this unity ceremony actually came to me from looking at pinterest.  This summer I would often pin the photos and recipes for a glass pitcher usually full of wine and then loaded with big slices and chunks of brightly colored fruit.  How absolutely inviting it looked, calling for me to host a garden party just to serve this very pretty drink.  I then thought how pretty for a summer wedding and not just for the reception but for the actual wedding.  This vibrant pitcher of fruit could so easily be incorporated into a ceremony.

In sunday school my daughter has been taught The Fruits of the Spirit, qualities such as goodness, kindness, gentleness and self control.  What if I were to do a ceremony on this same concept that spoke of "The Fruits of the Marriage".  Those fruits could be things such as respect, trust, loyalty, forgiveness, understanding, love and friendship.   At the altar would be a small table covered in a cloth, like the kind that is used for the unity candle.  On the table would sit a lovely glass pitcher full of water (a sanctifying element) and slices of oranges, lemons, limes, peaches, berries, kiwi, pineapple, mango.  Whatever colorful arrangement that pleased the couples taste and tastebuds.  Two glasses would sit to the side of the pitcher.  The officiant would first speak about "The Fruits of the Marriage" and then pour two glasses of water from the pitcher and hand them to the couple to drink from the fruit.

At the reception the same style pitchers could sit on every table with the same refreshing water and vibrant fruit.  And every guest could take a drink and think about the fruits of the marriage.
